Hopalong Cassidy was a popular hero of the Western genre in the mid-20th century, and a series of films were made featuring the character. The first film, "Hop-Along Cassidy," was released in 1935 and starred William Boyd as Cassidy. Boyd went on to play the character in dozens of films throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Most of the films followed a similar formula: Cassidy and his friends would investigate crimes and bring the villains to justice through a combination of wit and gunplay. The films were popular with audiences, and helped to establish the Western as a lasting genre in Hollywood. Today, Hopalong Cassidy is remembered as a cultural icon of the American West.
